Cuzco, how to enjoy it and save tons of money!

Cuzco aka the Rome of America. The Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Population: 358,052.
What you need to know if you go to Cuzco?
Basically, that you don’t need tons of money. It is more expensive than other cities in Peru but anyone who has a decent job can afford all the expenses.

Before you go, here are some things you definitely need to check:

1. Book everything about it at least two weeks before you travel. Why? It’s always good to know where you are going to and what are you gonna find there, the customs and how people live. You may need to use that info in some personal experience.

2. I went to Cusco at the end of October and first days of November. The weather was fine although it rained a lot some days. I heard that in December and January the weather is not very good but if that is the only time you have to go there, just go. Weather changes all the time. But try to don’t go from the end of January to March because then the weather is the worst of the year.

3. If you don’t wanna spend much money, you can travel by bus (what we did although I could have taken a plane). We travel from Trujillo to Lima by Linea (comfortable seats, toilet and reliable company). From Lima to Cusco you can go by Tepsa (comfortable seats, safe bus, food included and toilet). Now, one thing you need to know and I actually didn’t so:
- From Trujillo to Lima = 8 hours.
- From Lima to Cusco = 21 PAINFUL hours. Why? Only 5 hours of straight highway, for the next 16 hours, the highway is like a snake. You can’t sleep well, unless you TAKE SLEEPING PILLS, if you are TIRED or DRUNK (kidding!). But at least you can enjoy the view and save lots of money. Anyways, but if you travel with more people it is fun, unless you travel alone.
- If you take a plane, you spend like 4 times more money and Cusco is not that cheap but spends only an hour travelling. Your choice!

4. Take pills for the altitude sickness because it’s awful. Believe it or not, my friends didn’t have the altitude sickness but I (A Peruvian who travels to the Andes and basically everywhere in Peru) had it.

5. In Lima, you need to be careful and control your time if you don’t wanna miss the bus or plane. (It happened to us and I really hope that doesn’t happen to you). You never know how the traffic is gonna be in Lima,

6. At the bus station in Cusco (in case you take the bus), don’t pay more than 5 soles for the taxi. When arrived we didn’t know that and we paid like 8 soles or more. Next time we took a taxi from our hostel to the bus station it was only 3.50 soles.

7. When you arrived in Cusco, stayed at least 3 hours in your hotel. If you don’t, after an hour you will feel totally tired and sick. HELLO ALTITUDE! Let m breath, c’mon!

8. We stayed in a Guest House called “Estrellita” (15 soles each person, we were 4). It’s not a luxurious place but it’s very comfortable, you share the bathroom (with hot water) but it’s ok because there are lots of bathrooms in that place and at the time we were there just few people so we actually had like 3 bathrooms. Breakfast is included in the price, you can use the kitchen (I recommend that if what you’re cooking is not expensive), a mini hall where you can watch TV (with cable but C’ MON, you’re in Cusco you DON’T NEED A TV, believe me!), and they also offer laundry service (5 soles per kilogram of clothes).

9. If you wanna cook, you can buy food at Mega supermarket. I suggest you to go to Mega supermarket that is near Manco Capac Park because there are two supermarkets. Taxis are not more than 4 soles. I don’t know if they are more expensive now but in 2009 the prices were fine for 4 girls.

10. If you wanna go to Machu Picchu (of course, if not, what is the point of being there?) and don’t wanna carry all your stuff with you, you can let them at the Guest House, without paying anything. The people that worked there were very nice and honest. But if you don’t wanna have problems, just take your cameras, ipods, cellphones and money with you and just leave your clothes there.

11. To see the city and the ruins around it, I suggest you to take a tour, it’s not expensive and it’s divided in two days. The first day costs 15 soles and the second day tour costs 25 soles. Also you need to buy a ticket (the entrance to all of those places you are gonna visit).

12. The price of the entrance and lots of services depends on:
- Your nationality, if you’re Peruvian you pay little money but if you’re a foreigner you have to pay more. (I don’t say a little more, I say MORE… It’s racist, I know)
- If you are student or not. If you are a Peruvian student (from university) you pay less than anyone else. If you are a student from any other part of the world you pay less than a foreigner that is not a student. For that you need an ISIC carnet that certificates you’re a university student in another part of the world. Other carnets/cards are not allowed- I paid 40 soles but my friends had to pay 130 soles.

You will see places like: Ollantaytmabo (very beautiful ruins), Sacsayhuamán (these ruins are very cool and big and you will love it there), Pisac, The Sacred Valley (such a beautiful place, breathe the pure air there!), Chincheros (you’re gonna find some popular markets but don’t buy anything there because it’s more expensive that Cusco; you’re gonna see also some colonial churches but you’re not allowed to take pictures inside the place, so just your memory), Qenko, Tambomachay (far away from the other places) lots of museums (I recommend the Contemporary Popular Art museum), etc.

In the city you can go to the Cathedral but you have to pay like 25 soles so we didn’t visit, just took pics outside of it.  There is also Qoricancha aka Temple of the Sun. In the city, as a Peruvian I paid like 5 soles to get in, my friends paid 15 soles.

13. Be careful when you walk on the streets, especially if you go there during holidays. Every city is dangerous, and if you look like a “tourist” you know what I mean, with a camera and a map and an explorer hat is even more dangerous.

14. When you go to Machu Picchu you need to BUY THE TICKET in the train station (located in Pachacutec Street). I recommend buying the train ticket that leaves from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Caleintes. Let me explain!
Once you have your ticket that says: Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes:

- From Cusco you take a taxi (at Pavitos street) to Ollantaytambo. Pay between 8 to 10 soles (here I’m not sure if each one has to pay that, probably yea) but  no more than that. The way lasts between 1 h 30 m – 1 h 45 m. My experience, my taxi driver was nuts and he drove really fast and the way was dark and sometimes I think he was sleeping while driving so GOOD LUCK choosing your driver!
- You are now at the Ollantaytambo station. Once again, be careful with your things. Don’t trust in anybody. Take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (a city you have to stop before going to Machu Picchu).

Now, about the prices:

• There are 3 trains: The Backpacker (the cheapest and the one I recommend if you wanna save money) Vistadome (kinda expensive) and Hiram Bingham (the most luxurious one). If you are a backpacker like me, probably you wanna save money!
• Peruvians pay from 10 – 30 soles but they travel in a different part of the train. In my case, to go to Machu Picchu I paid 10 soles but on my way back (Not my lucky day!) there was no space in the Backpacker train so my friends and I had to pay for the Vistadome that costs 43 dollars (Way to expensive for me but I traveled in the same part of the train with my friends and got free snacks! Yeahh woohoo - sarcastic). So after my experience I recommend to book your train ticket for both ways when you arrive in Cusco, so do whatever you wanna do in the city and around it for 3 or 4 days and then go to Machu Picchu!
• If you are a foreigner you pay in the Backpacker train 32 dollars, Vistadome 43 dollars and Hiram Bingham lots of money like 250 dollars.

So for me it was 10 soles to go to Machu Picchu and 43 dollars just to come back.
• You should be at the train station at least an hour before you travel.
• From Ollantaytambo (where the train station is) to Aguas Calientes (the little town you arrive before going to Machu Picchu), the trip lasts 1h 40m aprox.

15. If you are gonna spend a night in Aguas Calientes, you should make the reservation at least two days ago you plan to go there. My friends I stayed at “Los Caminantes”, it was comfortable, people are kind, you share bathrooms but that’s not a problem at all. You can check that in your guide and if I find the phone number I’ll post it here.

16. To enjoy Machu Picchu and if you wanna climb the Waynapicchu (And I suggest you to do it because it’s a unique experience) it’s necessary that you spend a night in Aguas Calientes. We spend the night and woke up around 4 in the morning to start doing what you need to do around 5:

2 of us went to this place that is a block or two away from “Los Caminantes” to buy the tickets to enter in the Inca City: Machu Picchu. One or two blocks and then turn left. How I remember so many details about how many blocks and stuff like that… well… I’m not creepy, numbers is my thing. I remember numbers all the time! (dates, birthdays, phone numbers, number of blocks, etc) – Not kidding!

The other 2 went to this other place and bought the bus tickets to go from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu.

You have to wake up early because lots of people want to climb the waynapicchu and there are only 200 allowed at 7 am and 200 more around 10am I think. And believe me, we woke u at 4am and there were lines of people trying to buy their tickets. Lucky for us, lots of old couple that wouldn’t make it to the top of Waynapicchu… then those people proved that we were wrong! Shame on us!

- The bus tickets place is next to the bridge (there’s only one bridge so it’s impossible you get lost).

17. Now, the entrance has different prices and one more time it depends if you’re Peruvian or foreigner or student. In my case for being a Peruvian and a student I paid 31 soles but my friends they didn’t have ISIC cards and were from Germany, they had to pay 124 soles. This is important, wherever you go, bring your ISIC card, that proves that you are a foreigner student so you pay like 62 soles.

18. The bus ticket (again the racist thing) also depends if you’re Peruvian and student. My case, Peruvian student: 7 dollars, if you’re foreigner you pay 14 dollars and if you are student you pay 12.50 dollars. That bus ticket if for both ways.
The bus ride takes between 25 to 30 minutes.

19. If you wanna go to the Waynapicchu Mountain, you have to take the first bus. In my case I arrived to Machu Picchu around 6.40 am. So I had plenty of time. You enter to that way that takes you to the Mountain at 7am. There are 2 times scheduled when you can go to Waynapicchu: 7am and 10 am. Why 7am, well, for different reasons, first, it’s not very sunny so it’ll be better if you’re gonna climb (believe me!), second, because only 400 hundred people can climb the Waynapicchu every day. (Aha… only 400 people).

20. One thing that is VERY IMPORTANT: bring lots of water with you, and don’t believe people that work there and say to don’t carry bottles of water with you. But to avoid any trouble, you should take a container instead of plastic bottles because according to people that work there, it’s not allowed.
My experience: My friends and I followed the %$#& rules and we left our water and food in the hotel; we also threw the water we had (including juice, yourt) in the trash cans. What a mistake! Everybody took their water and food with them, because nobody said anything about it! Nobody! So why did they tell us that? Keep reading, my friend.

21. You climb the Waynapicchu for an hour, that’s what they say, but my friends and I did it in 2 hours and a half (both ways). Couch potatoes alert! (nah, it was exhausting, but it worth it). Wear comfortable running shoes and hats. Don’t bring too much weight with you (no heavy backpacks). It’s very very very exhausting! If you take your water with you, you’re gonna save between 5 to 8 soles because at the end of the trip they sell PLASTIC bottles of water for that price. A bottle of water here is 1 sol. So it was kinda expensive for me maybe not for my friends because they paid more for water before coming here but believe, then you’ll need those soles for other things including FOOD. Keep reading and you’ll know why!

22. If you wanna use the bathroom, use it before you enter because there are no bathrooms there; neither tWaynapicchu nor Machu Picchu. There’s one at the entrance but in case you wanna go to the bathroom and you’re in Machu Picchu, you can go outside with your entrance ticket and then go in again, without paying extra money.

23. If you wanna spend the whole day exploring the ruins, as I said before, you should take your own food with you, why? Because food in Machu Picchu is very expensive. My friends asked for sandwich and each one was between 20 – 25 soles (quite expensive, considering the fact that you pay between 5 to 8 soles for one in the rest of Peru). I asked for  “quiche” and that was the only thing we eat for 9 hours (the hours we spent there between Waynapicchu and Machu Picchu).

24. When you are back in Cusco and you plan to go to a disco, there are several places and if you go out at night, you’re gonna find out that everybody is your friend. People offer you free entrance tickets to lots of clubs around Plaza de Armas and free drinks too! What I recommend? Accept every ticket, every entrance… you never know. My friends and I went to Mamma Africa which is not bad but there are better clubs than it. There you can learn how to dance salsa for free from certain hours. Do it if you aren’t that bad or if you’re drunk enough (kidding again!). There’s another place called The Lek, nice place with music live, but it looked more like a place to talk and see professional dancers than to dance and have fun. And this place that for me and my friends was the best is called Roots where you can have all kinds of music but good music (drum & bas, r & b, electronic, rock, reggae, house, Latin music) and free drinks of course! What did we do? Well, we were in all of those clubs for the free drinks but at the end we stayed at Roots. Just be careful, because Cusco is also known as a city where people go to lose themselves there. Drug things, you know.

25. This street is called PROCURADORES. Be careful there. Everybody offers you drugs. All kind of drugs, very cheap! And if you don’t want to, they give it to you for free. Be careful with the “bricheros” too. There are lots in Cusco and sometimes they follow you! If you don’t have a clue what bricheros mean, google it.

26. You need to learn how to say NO! Why? Everybody follows you and offer you lots of souvenirs. Don’t buy on the streets. And don’t buy near Plaza de Armas, if you walk a little bit more you can find “Mercados artesanales”. Those are cheaper, more variety of things and you can bargain there. Never pay what they ask for. You put the price. For example if there’s a t-shirt for 10 soles, tell the seller: I’ll pay you 7 soles for it. Mention him/her you’re a student and that you don’t have much money. Don’t be afraid to bargain if you’re a foreigner, because, if I have to be honest, my European travel mates got better prices than I. Always offer 2 or 4 soles less, alright?

27. In the city, try to eat where the restaurants offer a menu. You are gonna find from different prices from 3 to fortysomething. Between 5 to 7 for a menu is fine. Trust me.

28. In the city, also there is this beautiful neighborhood during the day calles “San Blas”. Very beautiful but at night, just don’t go. You’re gonna find a line of tourists sitting down smoking weed.

29. Always have change and coins with you.

30. If you see something typical like people is customs or animals with their owners around always ask if you can take a picture. Sometimes they are gonna ask you for money.

My experience #1: these little girls asked us 1 sol to take a pic with this little llama. We gave them 1 sol but they wanted a sol each one, I know it’s not expensive but you are gonna feel like they are taking advantage of you.

My experience #2: One of my friends wanted to take pictured of this lady selling oranges in the market, when the woman saw what we were doing; she started throwing oranges to us so we had to run.

Ask before you take pictures of people. This advice can save your life!

* Btw, you can also go to Machu Picchu doing the Inca Trail but it’s more expensive and requires more time, 4 days and 3 nights walking. The experience is cool, at least that’s what I heard.

For more information about Cusco you can visit this website (http://wikitravel.org/en/Cuzco#b)  but I suggest to don’t believe everything that it says. My own experience is way better than what travel books can say about it.

** There are different routes. If you are planning about going to the South so first you go to Arequipa, then the bus ticket is not very expensive, and from Lima you can take a plane to Arequipa! Anyways, I wrote how to go to Cusco from Trujillo to Lima and then from Lima to Cusco.

Have a good trip! Hope this info helps!

STUFF I WOULD INVENT IF I HAD TIME
by Zooey Deschanel
Why Zooey? Porque Zooey?

Some weeks ago some people asked me why I like Zooey Deschanel that much. Well, I just can describe her in one word: UNIQUE.

I love Zooey and her work. Her music inspires me to do music like hers. It is so freshing. Her movies are cool and she sings in them. The way she is makes me realize that being different from the rest of people is not wrong, it just proves that being unique, makes us special. Her strange looks and the way she talks are not weird, are just her. Those things makes her being her. So:

1. She is cool.

2. She is Bones’s main actress little sister. For people who don’t know. Bones is my favorite TV show. Zooey was in one chapter in season 4 I guess and her sister rocks as Temperance Brennan.

3. She and Him are one of my favorite bands. M. Ward with Zooey are so talented and her videos are so… cute and different from the others.

4. She has a blog in tumblr so I can follow her things and she is funny.

5. I love her character Summer in 500 days with Summer, one of my favorite movies.

6. She and her husban Ben Gibbard rock! Their voices fit. Also, I like her because she is married to Ben Gibbard and there is hope that they can record a CD together and that will be awesome.

7. She is not Kathy Perry, although lots of people keep saying she is Kathy Perry, but she is not. And they’re not even 0.01% alike.

8. She loves animals as much as I do so that makes her and me: ADORABLE people in this world.

9. A company create dolls inspired on her and her style. Gosh!!! She has her own dolls! I wish I could have my own dolls.

And…

10. I like her because I see a lot of me in she. The only difference is that she is FAMOUS and I’M NOT.

—————————————————————————————————

3.   She and Him so una de mis bandas favoritas.

Rose =)

It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.

¿Qué me emociona?

1. Zooey Deschanel es una cantante de lujo. Escúchenla. Mis favoritas: “Why don’t you let me stay here?”, “In the sun”, “Sugar town” y “Hello Dolly”.

Y me gusta!

P.S. I’M TOO LAZY RIGHT NOW TO TRANSLATE THIS INTO ENGLISH. (SO SORRY, I’LL DO IT AS SOON AS I HAVE SOME FREE TIME).

A veces… / Sometimes…

——————————————————————————————————-

Today in the morning, I realized about something. Most of the time we want many things… but we can’t have all that we want. I’m not talking about material things, I mean the emotional, intellectual and why not someone special. To be more clear I’m gonna text some examples like a goal, a dream we want to accomplish, a friendship we want to have contact again.

And this is what I have to say, that what we want might be out of our hands “de momentum”. Because if there’s something clear to me is that we can have everything we want but we need a dose of faith, conviction and effort. So I must say that we can have everything if we give everything of us. Sometimes it’s not what we dreamed of but what we get is not that bad. If you think about it, it could have been worse.

Why do I talk about this? The truth is because sometimes I need to talk from “me to me” with myself. Often I need to raise my moral, cheer me up… or just a Little bit of support to myself. It happens, you know, I feel that I do more than others and that I deserve what I was fighting for. Sometimes I feel that I give too much from me and at the end it seems that I don’t have enough strength, but it’s not true.  Never is too much.  What is a lot for us can be little for others.

So, to sum up, I always gonna be there, I always gonna hold on, I always gonna make a huge effort, more and more, even though my reward is not around the corner at the time. It will come, sooner or later. Three months ago I thought life wasn’t fair for some people, but I was wrong. Life is fair with everybody and here again I’m not talking about material stuff. I mean… that we all were born with the same. We all have the same capacity to love, to wish, to fight for something we want, to achieve something, to get what we desire. We all have the same opportunities.

The one that perseveres reaches.
